Accident Checklist

In the event of an accident, knowing what to do and what information you need can be a big help. The following is a suggested checklist that you may want to follow if you’ve had an automobile accident.

  • Think Safety First:

    • Call 911 for Police and Emergency assistance.

    • If possible pull off to the side of the road and be aware of your surroundings.

    • Use hazard lights, safety cones/triangles and/or flares.

  • Collect Critical Information from all parties involved

    • Names, addresses and phone numbers

    • Driver license numbers

    • Insurance Company and Policy number

    • License plate tag number

    • Auto make/model

    • Responding police department information including officer name and badge number

    • If available, witness contact information

  • File a Police Report

    • This might be needed when filing an insurance company claim

  • Document Accident Damage

    • Take pictures

    • Record details (For example: location, time of day, road conditions, number of vehicles involved, etc.)

    • Draw a diagram

  • Report the claim to your insurance company
